This Is Why Trans People Rarely Speak Up When We're Misgendered
In the last 72 hours I’ve received more death threats, rape threats, abuse and hatred than I can count. I’m transgender, and on Sunday, Sept. 29, I found my name spreading across the gaming community for identifying the man who’d misgendered me.
Do people seriously have nothing better to do than track down someone’s phone number and send her death threats?
Get a life.
"You’ve lost weight" is not always a compliment.
"You’ve gained weight" is NEVER an insult.
Unless someone is a close friend and you know they’re trying to change their weight, your observations about the size of a person’s body are irrelevant.
Quick shout-out to the fabulous International Feminist Book Club, which is having its first discussion right now. I’ve already learned so much about sex ed and views on contraception in different countries, and we’ve touched on intersectionality, reclaiming the word “feminism,” pornography, abortion, and a host of other feminist issues. Posting on Tumblr and responding to asks and comments is one thing, but having a good conversation with other feminists from your basement in Maryland is infinitely better.
(If this sounds like something you’d like to get involved with, we can plug you in for next month! Just email Nikki; her contact information’s on her Tumblr, which is linked above.)
